Rick Harsch - Arjun And the Good Snake

Rick Harsch is the author of the Driftless Trilogy, three novels that take place in the dung heaps of the Midwestern United States, and the forthcoming A Circumnavigation through Maritime History. He currently resides in Izola, Slovenia.

So reads the book jacket of Arjun and the Good Snake, being an Ophidiological Account of Six Weeks in India without Alcohol, a literary memoir written in his native English that combines an homage to his son with various existential difficulties—venoms, from snakes and drink—as well as a compulsive unpredictable nature that make raising children a perverse test of love itself. The novel expounds on Indian philosophy and history, as well as nature and myth, mostly regarding snakes. The surface quest of the novel is finding a cobra in the wild, but a very different quest hides like a viper beneath a stone. Perhaps it may be said that the book suggests life is a series of ambushes concocted by the self and the strange, unpersuasive world that contains it.

Harsch moved to the Slovene coast nearly ten years ago for political and cultural reasons. His standing as a writer in the English language world is that of the well-reviewed, little read, rarely understood. His published novels have been translated into French. He lost his agent upon moving to Slovenia because he stopped writing novels set in the U.S., but Slovenia has proved fertile ground. Among his unpublished novels are what may be called the Adriatic Tales: Kramberger with Monkey (his next book from Amalietti & Amalietti if Arjun and the Good Snake sells enough copies), The Skulls of Istria, Adriatica Deserta, and the unfinished three volume tentatively titled Requiem for a Suicide. He also has a maritime history coming out in Poland this year.

The decision to publish in Slovenia is a conscious strike at the globalization of literature, intended to exploit the vast readership of the English Reading Continent of the Mind for the profit of a small Slovene publisher.

At KUD France Prešeren mr. Harsch intends to hold a question/answer session and to read random short passages from his book determined by audience suggestion.
